Raptors: 'Started From the Bottom..."

Link to Article: Raptors Hire Drake, Will Host 2016 All-Star Game

First Paragraph (Summary of Article) -> You do not need to write this heading

Drake with GM Masai Ujiri and CEO Tim Leiweke
Well, it's official! Toronto will be hosting the 2016 NBA All-Star Game and not only that, but Drake has been hired by the Raptors to be a "global ambassador."  The article mentions that the NBA All-Star game has never been held outside of the U.S. and that in itself is monumental.  The All-Star game will bring over $100 million in economic activity to the city as well as some basketball excitement to a city that has seen very little success with their Raptors since the good 'ol Vince Carter Days.  In addition, the article mentions that Drake will be a part of the process that sees the Raptors undergo a total re-branding that includes "new colours and branding, though not a new name."

Second Paragraph (My opinion/analysis + connection to course concepts) -> You do not need to write this heading

Overall, I am cautiously optimistic about the recent news, though I admit I have a bit of intrigue.  The All-Star game should be cool at the very least - to have all those stars in the city.  It would be a good time to check out downtown and perfect timing for many of you who will be hitting 19-20 around then.  However, I am sure marketers and organizers of the event are going to use a Premium Pricing Strategy for tickets as there will be lots of demand for this one-time event.  The wealthy in Toronto with lots of disposable income will be more than willing to dish out a few hundred bucks a seat.

The Drake move and rebranding are the big question marks.  I understand WHY they brought in Drake.  Let's face it...the guy reps Toronto hard and is liked     and followed by many teenagers and young adults, big not only in rap/hip-hop culture - the target market of much of the NBA - but he's big enough that he's mainstream too: my mom even knows the guy. So I suppose having him as an ambassador can't hurt because as the article states he will "not only attract fans but draw also top-level free agents to Toronto." More fans = more sponsorship = more $$ for MLSE.  However, the second part (drawing top level free agents) is where I am cautious! I've heard this before when  the Raps brought in Bryan Colangelo and all we
got was Jermaine "over the hill, no knees" O'Neal and Hedo "I like Pizza Pizza-"Ball" " Turkoglu who was no "Turkish Jordan" as they said.  As for the team's rebranding? Meh...I think the Raptors do have a decent brand already.  The bottom line is the team needs to win...BOTTOM LINE.  You can pull out all these gimmicks - change colours, get celebrities, etc., etc., etc. - but if the team doesn't win you will not attract any big star free agents NOR will the consumers (fans) waste their hard-earned dollars in exchange for a poor product on the court. The Raps are definitely 'starting from the bottom'...only time will tell if they stay there.

Kickin' It with KD...(Intro Post Example)

Check it.  This is my intro post for my blog. I'm a gr. 12 student at Pope in Scarborough - reppin' the east side of the Tdot.  I'm 6'1, jacked, and a break ankles on the ball court, provide facials on the vball court and make goalies look stupid on the soccer pitch.

I took this course because I heard Lamanna was teaching it.

Check out these new KD kicks that I want. (Testing ability to add a photo)

Siiiiiiiiick!

Also, check out this video I found.  A must see!

Lastly, testing out how to add a link for my future posts that will require me to link the news article.  Here are some suggested sites you can visit to find articles/news.

Blog ISP - Instructions and Intro

Well, if you're reading this, you properly read instructions and successfully navigated to this page.

Your semester long task:

(i) Maintain your own personal blog over the course of the semester that reflects upon current events happening in our world and connecting them to themes and concepts learned in our course, Sports and Entertainment Marketing. (Avg - 1 post every 2 weeks)
(ii) Read and respond to your peers' blogs and meaningfully contributing to discussions arising from those posts.

How much is it worth? Your personal current events blog will be part of the final evaluation allotment, worth 5% of your final overall grade in the course. (Rubric distributed in class).  Recall, this class does not have a final exam. :-)

What do I need to do?
- Check out an online news outlet (some suggestions to follow)

- Pick a current event/article that interests you and relates to the marketing/business of sports and/or entertainment (perhaps you look up something you heard about in the media beforehand, etc.)

- Write a blog based on this news.  Break it down as follows:

(i) Brief summary of article/event
(ii) How it relates to the Marketing/Business of Sports and Entertainment and key concepts/themes in the course
(iii) Your opinion and reflection on this news (could be as separate paragraph(s) or included throughout blog)
(iv) Link the article and link/post any photos, videos, etc.

An exemplar blog entry will be posted to give you an idea of the expectation.  Nothing to sweat!  This semester-long task is not meant to be stressful, but rather interesting, fun and an introduction to post-secondary learning that often occurs in an online, collaborative environment.

FOLLOWERS:

Every student needs to follow all other students' blogs.  This will enable you to see new posts and  subsequently respond to the post and/or discussion.  I will collect all students' Blog URL's and will distribute to everyone so you can add them.

NOTE: BE SURE TO BE AWARE OF THE PRIVACY SETTINGS...IF YOU ONLY WANT YOUR FOLLOWERS TO SEE YOUR BLOG, CLICK THE APPROPRIATE PRIVACY SETTING.  IF YOU WANT ALL VIEWERS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB TO HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR BLOG, THEN THAT IS UP TO YOU.  EITHER WAY, BE WEARY OF RESPONSIBLE BLOGGING PRACTICES AND RESPONSIBLE INTERNET ACTIVITY AS DISCUSSED IN CLASS.

I am sure we will all get comfortable with all the functionality and tools as we play around with them.  I will proceed to make two blog examples.  The first is just introductory.  The second will be an example of a regular, subsequent post to make in the semester.

Good luck,

Mr. Lamanna
